Gee, so please, illuminate me, exactly how ARE women ‘allowed’ to be?

We’re not allowed to like to shop, want to sleep with a hot guy, get upset when a guy we’re dating destroys something we care about, have a girlish voice, be tiny, be a ‘bro’, be good at lazer tag, or do nice things.

So uh, pray tell, what, in all your authority of what women are allowed to do, are we actually allowed to do?

Or should I say, be portrayed as doing.

I guess as the person who wrote this piece for Sadie, I should speak to your criticisms.

Actually, that’s not what I said at all.

On HIMYM, when a woman is portrayed as loving to shop, she runs herself into debt and isn’t able to get back in good financial standing until her husband saves the day with his better job. That was my problem with that.

When women "want to sleep with a hot guy” on HIMYM (presumably you were referring to the literally hundreds of women who Barney sleeps with and refers to as “bimbos”), it is because they have been tricked into doing so. None of them ever see through his bullshit and say, “Wow, you’re an asshole, but whatever, I’ll sleep with you anyways,” which I guess would be fine because they would know the situation. But the beautiful women who get laid on this show are portrayed as complete idiots. And that was my problem with that.

When a woman “gets upset when a guy she’s dating destroys something she cares about” (I’m assuming you mean Zoe protesting when Ted wants to tear down her favorite building), I actually thought that part of the show was awesome. Way to stick it to the man, Zoe. What I didn’t like, however, was the fact that once Zoe sticks up for her beliefs, she becomes the villain. She enrolls in Ted’s class to bully him and recruit his students, cries in front of Ted to manipulate him into insulting GNB on tape, and when Ted and Zoe finally end up dating, they break up because they are spending too much time arguing. In other words, her beliefs get in the way of her being a person worthy of spending any time with. And that was my problem with that. 

The rest of the things you listed were ridiculous. Of course women are allowed to be tiny, have girlish voices, be a bro, be good at lazer tag, or do nice things. Please don’t insult me by suggesting that I think all women should be extremely feminine, mean, deep-voiced giants. My problem with HIMYM is not the content regarding women, or even their particular character traits. My problem is the way that these traits are shown in a negative light. To answer your question, I think that women should be portrayed as women who aren’t punished for being women. Thank you and goodnight.
